What Technology Is in Your Shoes? Learn How It Works

What technology is in your shoes?

Understand cushioning, insoles, midsoles, outsoles, ventilation and materials so you can compare shoes by function rather than by marketing name.

Start with the part of the shoe

Insole: sits directly under the foot. PUMA SoftFoam and SOFTFOAM+ are mainly associated with this layer.

Midsole: provides much of a shoe's cushioning and response. Adidas Boost, Cloudfoam, PUMA IGNITE and EVA-based foams can appear here depending on the model.

Outsole: contacts the ground and affects traction and wear. PUMA EverTrack is an outsole-focused technology.

Upper and textiles: influence ventilation and moisture management. Adidas Climacool and Nike Dri-FIT address these needs in different product categories.

How to compare technologies

Do not assume two shoes will feel the same because they share one technology. Fit, geometry, foam density, outsole, upper and intended use all affect the final experience.
